The Months of the Islamic Calendar: Part 3

The Islamic calendar is extremely important, and it’s comprised of 12 months based on a lunar cycle. We have looked at the first four months and in the previous blog we ended with the eighth month, the Sha’ban. In this last part, we look at the last four months of the Islamic calendar, which are: Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah, and Dhu al-Hijjah

    Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and its meaning of ‘burning heat’ is connected to fasting on an empty stomach. This is the month in which the Quran was revealed, as the Quran was sent from heaven to Earth during the Ramadan. Fasting during this month is one of the Five Pillars of Islam; it begins at daylight, from dawn to sunset.

    Shawwal

Meaning ‘raised’, Shawwal is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. Its name comes from the season of the year when the female camels would typically be carrying babies. The Shawwal begins with Eid al-Fitr, the first day, when fasting is prohibited. Six days of fasting can be done starting the day after Eid al-Fitr.

    Dhu al-Qadah

Dhu al-Qadah means ‘the one of truce’, and it’s the eleventh month of the Islamic calendar. This month is very sacred in Islam, representing one of four sacred months in which war is forbidden. People can, however, defend themselves if for some reason they are attacked.

    Dhu al-Hijjah

‘The one of the pilgrimage’, Dhu al-Hijjah, is the twelfth and last month of the Islamic calendar. This extremely sacred month is the one in which the Hajj takes place. Muslims from around the world congregate in Mecca to visit the Kaaba, with the Hajj being performed during the eight, ninth, and tenth days of the Dhu al-Hijjah. The Festival of Sacrifice, or Eid al-Adha, starts on the tenth day and finishes at sunset on the thirteenth day.

The first ten days of the Dhu al-Hijjah are said to be the most blessed ones, and good deeds must be done during this period.
